Wide Eye Productions just wrapped up a shoot in the South Pacific on board an oceanographic research vessel. The shoot documented a study of the Samoan Passage, an underwater “nozzle” in the Pacific Ocean. University of Washington Oceanographer Matthew Alford contributed this report about the voyage. You can read more of his Samoan Passage blog, here.
We had the chance to go visit a tiny village called Lufilufi on the east coast of the island of U’polu. John and Matthew learned to dance and weave, Samoan style. Our new friend Jenny (Oefa in Samoan), a Peace Corps volunteer, is teaching English there and invited us to join them.
The served us a Samoan feast – yams, taro, chicken, oka (raw fish soup with coconut milk), huge Samoan bananas and fresh locally caught fish.
Later, we swam under a waterfall and snorkeled over an unbelievably vibrant and colorful reef.
That night, we had yellowfin sashimi – a whole plate.
