Christmas toys came early to Wide Eye this year. Meet our newest addition: the Sony FS-7 XDCAM. This small and lightweight camera is built for run-and-gun documentary style shooting with its ergonomic shoulder mount, balanced design and trigger/hand grip. But it also sports a full size 35mm image sensor. Documentary style shooting with that shallow, cinematic look? Now we can have our cake and eat it too!
Of course, what really makes the FS-7 stand apart is its ability to record in 4K and super slow-motion internally (up to 180 fps in HD)! It also records in the standard frame rates (23.98p, 29.97p, 59.94i/p) at up to 3840 x 2160 resolution. The FS-7 supports dual on-board recording to Sony XQD memory cards for backup or recording in different formats, and it has Wifi capabilities (I know…take a deep breath). The XCDA-FS7 extension on the back also allows for raw output to a recorder as well as ProRes HQ 422 recording.
With its versatile E-mount lens adapter, we are able to use all of our Canon glass. This camera allows for a cinematic look and depth of field with the Super 35mm size sensor and Cine color controls, which offer dynamic color grading and correction capabilities in post. It’s also very powerful in low-light situations, shooting up to 6400 ISO with minimal noise. This is a beautiful all-in-one camera, and we can’t wait to start our next project with it…but first, slomo test shoots are in order.
